Swiss Medical Association

The FMH - Foederatio Medicorum Helveticorum / Federation of the Medical Profession in Switzerland - is a private association just like the 24 cantonal medical associations grouping between 90 and 93% of all the physicians in Switzerland. Nearly half of its approx. 28'000 members work in their own medical practice, about 10'000 are hospital doctors in the course of postgraduate medical education or holding the position of chief physicians, while the remaining members are retired or working abroad.

The Federation of the Medical Profession in Switzerland/FMH is the parent organisation of the cantonal medical associations as well as the medical specialists' associations. As their professional association, the FMH represents the medical profession towards the population as well as towards authorities and institutions.

One of the main tasks of the Federation of the Medical Profession in Switzerland/FMH is to establish the regulations and to supervise the period of postgraduate medical education of assistant doctors after their state examination. Most doctors conclude their period of postgraduate medical education by obtaining the title of a medical specialist. The FMH is also actively engaged in quality assurance where co-operation with specialists' associations and health insurance companies is an important aspect.
