Institute of Health Economics and Management

IEMS is a multidisciplinary institute involved in research and teaching in the field of health economics and management. It is attached to both HEC Lausanne and the Faculty of Medecine at the University of Lausanne and is actively supported by the Hospital Administration of the Canton de Vaud.

The core mission of the institute is to contribute to the development of equitable, quality and efficient health systems through the development and dissemination of scientific knowldedge in health economics and management. It is engaged in the following activites:

Its activities build upon the expertise it has developed in 7 core domains: Regulation of Health Systems; Pharmaceutical Economics and Policy; Statistical Methods and Econometrics; Information Systems and Database in Health Care; Comparative Performance of Health Systems; Economic Evaluations; Health Economics in Developing Countries.

IEMS has close collaborations with the Institute of Social and Preventive Medecine (IUMSP) in Lausanne and with other institutions internationally, such as Harvard Medical International.

IEMS is leading house of the Swiss Network Health Economics, whose members are the main academic institutions in Switzerland doing research and teaching in health economics and whose aim is to foster collaborative study programmes and research projects between partners.

IEMS has offered post-graduate programmes since 1998, notably a Master in Health Economics and Management (MASHEM). It is also offering a doctorate programme in the field of health economics.

Health Technology Assessment is a key element in the field the IEMS is active in, and economics an important tool used within the framework of HTA.
