The main objective of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) is the promotion of independent basic research covering the whole range of scientific disciplines.
Research topics are chosen by the researchers themselves. Scientists applying for funding submit their proposals to the SNSF. They are subsequently assessed by the Research Council, which mainly focuses on their scientific quality and the originality of the projects. In order to guarantee independent assessment, external experts are called in from abroad.
Aspects of Health Technology Assessment are / were treated in National Research Programmes such as "Biomedical Engineering", "Somatic Gene Therapy" or "Implants and Transplants".
