The University Hospital in Lausanne (CHUV) is a 835 beds teaching hospital serving as the city hospital for Lausanne and its surroundings, as well as the reference hospital for the canton of Vaud and the whole country for some diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. It is also a research centre developing new procedures, testing them in clinical trials and introducing them into clinical practice.

Hirslanden head office, located in Zürich, has, in 2001, established a central medical department with research for its growing network, which currently comprises thirteen acute care hospitals in the German and French speaking parts of Switzerland and about 1'200 collaborating physicians of all specialities. This setting allows for an integration of all possible levels of care. It provides a unique opportunity to develop and evaluate new procedures and to assess their effectiveness in clinical practice.

The Insel Hospital serves both as University Hospital and Medical Center (> 1000 beds) for the Canton of Berne and adjoining regions, i.e. for more than 1.2 million people. Its mission consists in the provision of medical care, training and continued education for various health professionals as well as in the maintenance of an environment for research and development. These duties have to be carried out within a complex framework of ever increasing external and internal requirements with regard to organisation and engagement of resources.
